What's new in MaterialEX
Version 2.3.0
New in 2.3.0
- Skin, in a new family: «Organic». A smart material for human skin: over a light medium tone, the flush of thin parts —ears, nose— from the baked thickness, redder and darker creases, fine pores in the roughness and the height, and the oily sheen of what sticks out. Tint takes it to any darker tone.
- Light passes through thin parts. Any layer can be «Translucent», next to «Emissive», with its Strength and the colour of the light that passes through: with the light behind, ears and nose glow red, like skin against the light, and the shadow comes in softer. How thin each point is comes from the baked maps. Skin comes translucent.
- Translucency leaves the program. To Blender, as the Principled's subsurface scattering, which Cycles and EEVEE compute for real; in the GLB, as diffuse transmission (
KHR_materials_diffuse_transmission) when the model is baked; and for engines, a Translucency map and —baked— a Thickness map for their subsurface profile.
- The
.blend looks like the viewport and is named after the project. It carries the tone curve and exposure, the sky with its rotation, the key light as a sun and the camera, and opens in «Material Preview» looking through that camera. In your own .blend, what you built stays: the sky, the light and the camera come in only if you didn't put in your own.
What 2.3.0 fixes
- The relief in the
.blend is the one in the viewport, and it goes in once. The exported normal came out softer than what was painted —and different at each resolution—, and the height also went into the material's «Displacement», which in Blender adds the relief again. The same goes for the GLB and the engines.
- The viewport's ACES curve is the real one, Blender's «ACES 1.3»: mid grey and saturated reds came out lighter. A project saved with the old one opens with one more stop of exposure and looks as it was painted.
- With the app in English, meshes without a material form the «No material» set, not one named in Spanish.
Version 2.2.0
New in 2.2.0
- «Export» in the top bar. A button with the two outputs you ask for almost every time: «Export GLB…» leaves a
.glb with the textures inside in the folder, and «Export .blend…», a .blend with the images packed. «More options…» opens «Export» in the panel, where the usual export checkboxes are still there; the quick outputs don't touch them. If Blender is missing, the .blend first asks where it is.
- The axis gizmo, like Blender's. Next to the light disc, the three world axes with Blender's colours and names —Z up—. Click an axis to look from there; click the same one again for the opposite side; drag it to orbit. As in Blender, aligning to an axis switches to orthographic and orbiting goes back to perspective; if you chose orthographic in «Camera», it stays.
- A click on the empty canvas lets go of the selection, like Esc: the selected piece, the frame of a decal you just placed —the layer stays, and the frame comes back when you touch it— and the Stroke path, which stays as a layer.
- With a colour field's eyedropper on, its icon follows the pointer, so you know the next click on the model takes a colour. Esc cancels it.
What 2.2.0 fixes
- The eyedropper takes the colour of any piece, also one of another material: with the dragon's eye selected, the tongue gave a colour that wasn't its own.
- The eye of a layer row no longer sits on top of its drag handle.
- «Template…» and «Export for engine…» are no longer stuck together in «Export».
Version 2.1.2
New in 2.1.2
- The colour field is a bar with its code. Colour pickers were a circle that looked like a slider handle; now they're a bar that shows its
#RRGGBB. You can type the code, and the picker has an eyedropper: the next click on the model takes its colour, without painting. Esc cancels it.
- Ctrl + mouse wheel changes the size of the tool. Over the viewport, it changes the size its bar shows: the brush radius, the width of the next decal or the size of the text. The camera doesn't move.
- The app asks where Blender is if it can't find it, only once, and the chosen path is remembered. It also asks when you open a
.blend without Blender, or when you click the notice on the bottom bar.
- Right-click a decal, a tip, a stencil or a sky to show it in its folder or remove it from the library, as you already could with a PBR set. Removing asks first and moves it to the Recycle Bin, where it can be restored. What you already placed or painted with it stays.
What 2.1.2 fixes
- The store version opens
.blend files again. On a PC where the app had already created its data folder, Blender couldn't find what the app prepared for the conversion, and opening failed.
- The Blender path you typed in «Export» wasn't saved: it was lost when the app closed. Now it stays. And if you pick the
blender-launcher.exe from the Start menu, the blender.exe next to it is used, because with the launcher the conversion failed without saying why.
- Picking a layer of a material no longer shifts the right panel. With «Rust in the bare patch» from «Chipped paint», the panel widened and pushed everything below it.
- A decal's long name no longer spills out of its tile. It ran from edge to edge, went under the green dot and was cut at the end; now it keeps some air on the sides and, if it doesn't fit, it's cut in the middle, so you see how it starts and how it ends.
- Loading a decal, a tip or a stencil gives its name, not its catalog's; and a tip or a stencil in WebP now shows up in the library.
- A text's colour changes live, even with another tool in hand: its section in the right panel has it. And the colour picker no longer closes with every click inside it.
- With the app in English, the filters header and the Wave tooltip are in English.
Version 2.1.1
New in 2.1.1
- The intensity of what a PBR set brings. The layer of a PBR set has a row for each channel the set brings — colour, roughness and metallic — that multiplies it from ×0 to ×2, with ×1 as it comes; height keeps its Bump. A project that uses it opens in this version and later.
What 2.1.1 fixes
- A material's controls no longer undo what you changed by hand. Moving Wear, Pattern or any other control of an applied material reset the colour — or whatever it was — you had changed on one of its layers. Now what you changed stays, and the rest follows the control. And the layers that grow from the one below, like the crust and the run-off of splashed mud, no longer come loose from it when a control moves.
- A real HDRI no longer makes materials look wet. With a sky like a sunset everything looked wet, and a roughness at its maximum still showed sparkles of the sun, with and without ray tracing. Now a rough surface reflects the sky evenly, as it should.
- The channels a PBR set doesn't bring no longer look like black buttons. They show a dashed outline, a click doesn't change them, and on hover they say the set doesn't have that map. A missing roughness or metallic is painted on a layer above.
- Unselected chips stand apart. They all wrote in white; now the selected one is white and the rest are grey.
Version 2.1.0
New in 2.1.0
- Apply a material only to the selected pieces. Select one or more pieces in Pieces and click a material in the dock — a built-in one, one from "In this file" or a PBR set —: it goes only onto those pieces, with a mask, and the rest of the material stays as it was. The material's button says "To the piece" or "To the pieces" before you click, Ctrl+Z removes it, and if the pieces belong to several materials, each one gets its own. With no pieces selected, "Apply" covers the whole material, as always.
What 2.1.0 fixes
- Long material names no longer push the panel out of the window. On a model with very long material names — Tripo's are "tripo_mat_" plus a code —, as soon as there were two materials the "Set" dropdown showed them in full and the right panel slid out of the window. Now the name is shortened in the middle and reads in full on hover, also in its list and in "Merge with…".
Version 2.0.1
What 2.0.1 fixes
- The exported
.blend carries all your materials. On a model with several materials on one object — a sword with the blade, the edge and the maker's mark on a single mesh — the .blend kept the textures but left the pieces with their old materials, and some got another piece's. Now each material stays on the faces you painted, with its UV, and if a piece is no longer in the file, the export says so instead of ending in "OK".
- Unpacking the
.blend's images no longer overwrites them. Each texture has its own file in textures/, next to the .blend, with its material's name in front: they were all called base_color.png and only one was left.
- The export folder stays clean. With "Deliver only the .blend", a folder with a
__pycache__ inside was left behind.
- The English interface no longer mixes in Spanish. The controls of the stroke dynamics menu (Stabilize, Radial and its copies, Scatter, Size jitter and Flow jitter), those of the physical brush, the Bloom Threshold and their tooltips came out in Spanish. And after switching languages, the status bar stayed in the previous one: now it names the new language.
